Abstract

This experiment was conducted to clarify the effects of daminozide and 2, 4, 5-TP on preharvest drop, fruit quality and storage potential of Jonathan and Tsugaru apples. The results are summarized as follows:
Daminozide reduced the preharvest drop of Jonathan apples in proportion to spray concentration, but Tsugaru apples failed to respond to this chemical. 2, 4, 5-TP was more effective for control of preharvest drop of both cultivars.
Daminozide tended to increase coloration and firmness, but did not affect the soluble solids content and total acidity. Growth of fruit diameter was negatively affected by increasing concentration of daminozide.
Application of daminozide resulted in reduced Jonathan spot occurrence at harvest and this trend of lower incidence at higher concentration persisted during storage.
Daminozide reduced the rate of weight loss during storage while 2, 4, 5-TP enhanced the weight loss.
